My wife, Lori, and I recently took a much-needed vacation. It gave me a chance to relax and catch up on quite a few things.
I was able to catch up on “required” reading — past issues of Rolling Stone, among other “literature.” It also allowed me to
finally listen to some music I had downloaded but had not yet heard, including the verse that began this article.

Life is a Carnival …
Reflections on a Career
And I had a chance to reflect on my dental career.
You see, I left the world of private practice at the end of August
last year. It was a great and fulfilling career that began in 1978.
When I started in private practice, impressions were taken with
plaster, alginate and the wonderful-tasting and -smelling rubber
base. Acid etchingwas only allowed on enamel, and light-activated
composite needed a UV light for 60 — yes, 60! — seconds to work.
And porcelain on occlusals of posterior teeth — forget about it!
Things have definitely changed, and digital dentistry has been
at the forefront of that change. Many of those changes are high-
lighted right in this issue.
While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, creating that
beauty in dentistry isn’t necessarily an easy procedure. Thankfully,
Dr. Stepan Lebedev shows that beauty can be created by skillfully
polishing restorations.
Dr. Darin O’Bryan explains in his article how digital dentistry
can be a major part of restoring anterior implants. From final
impressions to milling abutments and final bridges, Dr. O’Bryan
shows how to create a predictable outcome.
In his latest article, Dr. Mike Skramstad covers how restoring
implants has never been easier or more predictable using digital
dentistry. What makes his case even more interesting is that it is
the culmination of the live surgery that was done at last May’s
Mentor meeting.
