Yet, at the same time, while spending money on our homes and
personal hobbies, we treat our places of work — where we spend
just as much time, if not more — as something out of the Stone Age:
afraid to invest money because you can’t quite figure out the ROI.
Shouldn’t your work environment be somewhere you want to
actually go? Instead of waking up every day and getting anxiety
about going to work, why not fill the place with things that give
you joy so you actually look forward to going there?
This hobby happens to be my saltwater aquarium. I even have
a separate “fish room,” which houses all of the equipment that
supports the tank. Filters, protein skimmer, automatic water
change system, UV sterilizer — you name it, I have it for my tank.
As you can imagine, designing, building and maintaining the
tank isn’t cheap. But, I’ll tell you what: to me, the tank is priceless.
It’s a source of endless enjoyment for myself and my family. It’s
a source of bonding for me andmy girls, as my daughters help feed

Why You Should Treat Your Practice More Like Your Hobby
just like many of you reading this, i have a hobby outside of dentistry.
Also, like many of you, I just cannot economically justify this hobby, nor do I care to justify it economically — because it gives
me great joy and pleasure to participate in this hobby.
the fish and take care of the tank. I don’t care what it costs; it’s
worth every penny because it adds to the enjoyment of my home
and my time with the family.
We all have hobbies on which we spend money to make our
lives more enjoyable —hobbies that if you look at the finances of it,
would be hard to justify the expense. Maybe it’s that home theater
system that you just installed in your spare bedroom. Perhaps it’s
the exercise room that you built in your house even though you
haven’t been to the gym in months. Maybe it’s that dream kitchen
with every imaginable appliance, despite the fact that you eat out
more often than you cook at home. Every one of us could find
something we have investedmoney into for our home and, regard-
less of what it has cost, we look at that project and proclaim that it
has been well worth it.
Maybe it’s the new chairs that you have been wanting to buy, or
the second milling unit for your CEREC that makes your quadrant
cases go faster. Or perhaps it’s some other technology that you saw
at the last dental meeting that youwant to integrate into your office.
Sometimes cost is not the most important thing in evaluating
whether or not you shouldpurchase something for your office. Some-
times it’s about creating an environment that will make your work
more enjoyable. Sometimes, enjoyingwork is actually a good thing.
You deserve to make your work environment as desirable as your
home. It’s only fair; you probably spendmore time at work than you
do at home. Shouldn’t that time be as enjoyable as possible?
