e.max abutment blocks are just incredible
The ability to do a custom abutment and crown in a single visit for
an incredibly reasonable fee (relative to the cost of implants) is just
amazing. This one product is going to entice thousands of tradi-
tional clinicians to take a serious look at the CEREC. As implanto-
logy continues to grow, so does CAD/CAM, and this intersection of
the twodisciplines is anaturalwith the capability of today’s system.
Celtra Duo and Suprinity are
pretty innovative materials
I have to be honest that I didn’t really understand the point of
these two products when I first heard about them. But having
a block that is 210 mpa when polished – that increases to 370
mpa with a glaze firing – is pretty interesting. This is a block
that you are going to have to take pretty seriously in the future.
Both Vita and Dentsply developed the blocks together in
Europe and now that they are available for sale in the U.S., it
marks another tool in the CEREC user’s tool belt.
You need to join the
cerecdoctors.com Academy
I can’t say this any more bluntly. The Academy is something that
the CEREC community is seriously lacking. We have an incred-
ible and robust online community on cerecdoctors.com, but the
Academy takes it up another level. With clinical and practice
management tools, we have the ability to support CEREC owners
on a whole new level. Visit
to
learnmore about the great resources available to CEREC owners.
The cerecdoctors.com Scientific
Symposium is going to be epic
Well, maybe not on the level of
Animal House
-epic, but epic
none-the-less. The symposium is scheduled for Oct. 24-25,
2014, at the Aria Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The symposium is an amenity for all cerecdoctors.com
Academy members. If you have read this magazine, you read
about the cerecdoctors.com Academy. Our goal with the
Academy is to create an organization that will allow CEREC
owners to not only collaborate online, but also congregate in
person at the Symposium.

as 2013 comes to a close, i want to take the opportunity
to reflect on some happenings in the CAD/CAM community.
Here are some random thoughts in no particular order of
importance.
CAD/CAM is now officially mainstream
To the chagrin of many traditionalists, market penetration of
CAD/CAM continues to rise and is hovering in the 15 percent
range nationally. In Geoffrey Moore’s book,
Crossing the
Chasm
, he says that with any technology, you have a bell curve
of usage. The usage of a piece of technology increases expo-
nentially, once that technology hits roughly 15 percent market
penetration. The iPhone’s market penetration of 15 percent
took only minutes, as millions upon millions have sold. With

The Future Looks Bright
NewMaterials and Resources Support CEREC Owners
“The innovations that we will see
in 2014 will continue to trickle to
the masses as more and more people
realize that this is not just a crown-
making machine; CEREC can be a
vital part of any practice.”
CEREC, it has taken close to 30 years, due to a higher price tag
and a limited market of dentists who are eligible to purchase
the technology.
I see an exponential growthpattern simply due to the amount
of innovations that are happening in the CEREC commu-
nity. New materials, including Suprinity and Celtra Duo have
just hit the market. The abutment blocks are finally a reality
and as of this writing are in the final stages of FDA approval.
The 4.2 software is an amazing first step toward the ability to
easily do more comprehensive dentistry. All of these, plus the
innovations that we will see in 2014 will continue to trickle to
the masses as more and more people realize that this is not
just a crown-making machine; CEREC can be a vital part of
any practice.
