visualizing cement-retained restorations (separate
abutment and crown) and screw-retained resto-
rations (single element). For the remainder of the
article, we will refer to cement-retained restora-
tions as hybrid abutments and screw-retained
restorations as hybrid abutment crowns. We use the
term “hybrid” since a milled abutment or abutment
crown is bonded to a Sirona TiBase.
The A14 MO block is primarily used for hybrid
abutments. The medium opacity of the block is
present to help block out the TiBase so there is no
titanium show-through. The MO block comes in
In this article and case study, we will discuss how
Sirona Dental Systems and Ivoclar Vivadent have
created an integrated, chairside solution that will
help alleviate many of these issues for both dentists
and dental laboratories.
Revolutionary IPS e.max CAD abutment blocks
that can be custom fabricated in less than an hour
for a total cost of around $150 will quite possibly
change the way we think about restoring implants
from this point on.
To better understand how this process works,
we first must look at the blocks themselves (Fig. 1).
There are two types of blocks that are manufac-
tured: the A16 LT (low translucency) and the A14
MO (medium opacity). There is a customized
hole that is pre-manufactured in the center of the
block. This hole corresponds to the exact dimen-
sion of the Sirona Titanium Base (TiBase) (Fig. 2).
Sirona Dental Systems produces 5 mm TiBases
corresponding to the attachments of all major
implant companies. The top of the TiBase (above
the shoulder) is universal and has a precision
male notch. The female receptor for this notch is
located inside the hole on the abutment block. This
produces a physical lock that limits micro move-
ment at the implant/TiBase interface (Fig. 3).
Notice the exact, pre-manufactured fit of the
TiBase to the e.max CAD abutment block. The
A14 MO and A16 LT blocks (Fig. 1) serve specific
purposes. The best way to think about this is by
