for teaching and patient care. In essence: making a difference.
There is an interesting quote from Dr. John Pasicznyk in our
doctor profile article when he talks about commitment. He talks
about the importance of dedication to the profession and the
commitment togettingbettereveryday.He iscommittedtohelping
others get “jazzed up” about technology and its possibilities. Basi-
cally: making a difference.
So, back to the verse in my
opening paragraph. What are
the choices you are making
now to better yourself so that
you can make a difference? For
me, it has been interesting to
watch the many changes the
profession has gone through
over the 35-plus years I have
been associated with dentistry.
And with those changes have
come many opportunities to
learn. Of course, many times, in
order to gain this knowledge,
some sacrifices are necessary.
But it’s worth it — not only for
the person gaining the knowl-
edge, but also for thosewho come in contactwith the personwho
learns. It leads to a chance tomake a difference.
On a wall in the Spear Campus work area is this core value:
Participation is non-negotiable. Don’t just sit there. Contribute,
make things better. Raise the bar and soar above it.
Here’s to Hiawatha and all those who make a difference.

bear with me as i become a little preachy.
As many of you know, I really like — no, love — rock ‘n’ roll
music. In fact, it is my firm belief that everything in life can be
explained by a rock lyric or rock album title. Recently, while
listening to one of my many bootlegs of a Pearl Jam concert, I
heard a verse that was added to one of their songs: “This is my
chance, this is my choice, this
is my voice.”
So, what does this have to
do with anything, especially a
magazine dedicated to tech-
nology? A close friend of my
sonChrispassedawayrecently.
It struck close to home for my
wife Lori and for myself.
Hiawatha went to Iowa
State on a football scholarship,
suffered a serious leg injury
which forced him to learn how
to walk again. He earned his
masters, worked with the homeless and mentally ill, taught in
Harlem, N.Y., and even climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. But, most
of all, he made a difference in people’s lives. As his friend, Marc,
said at his funeral service, “Hiawatha never let anything limit
him. He didn’t let people or circumstances take anything away
from him accomplishing his goals. He wanted others to do the
same.”
It’s my belief that we, as dentists, have the responsibility to
patients and ourselves to continually seek self-improvement
in order to help others. We can set goals and we can dream
on what we can do to make a difference. In our cover story,
Dr. Pascal Magne shares how his childhood dream helped lead
to his work in dentistry today. He also talks about his passion
