restorative dentistry, the transfer of infor-
mation relating to the patient’s mouth
— necessary for the dental laboratory
in designing and finishing the prosthetic —
hasalwaysbeenapotentialsourceoferrors.
On the other hand, a digital-only path has
limited restorativematerial options.
That is, until now.
Today, digital technology still allows us
to avoid traditional elastomeric impres-
sions — and the subsequent creation of
plaster models — and still have access
to material options that include metal
ceramics and Captek, in addition to
Zirconia or lithium disilicate.
Within the digital workflow, it is a huge
advantage that a “virtual model” can be
viewed in real time, together with the
laboratory. It is arguably equally impor-
tant that the virtual model be printed and
mounted as well.
The case presented here highlights
the advancements within not just digital
dentistry but digital workflow itself,
including the realities of printed models.
Now, with virtual and printed digital
models, clinicians aren’t as limited inmate-
rial-selectionoptions, andare able tobetter
match optimal materials to clinical need.

The 55-year-old patient is in good
health and does not smoke. The
patient has a complete gold-resin
upper fixed-bridge restoration, and
presents with pain on the right side;
and was offset with a resin bite of the
lower bridge.
