This aids in getting the proper propor-
tions and to determine if any gingival
contouring or osseous crown length-
ening would be needed.
The study models and photos were
then sent toWinter Springs Dental labo-
ratory. The amount of length to be added
to the central incisors and the propor-
tions for the anterior smile design were
discussed. A treatment wax-up was then
created (Fig. 6). After the wax-up was
delivered, it was duplicated and plastic
vacuforms were made for creation of the
temporaries. The vacuforms were then
trimmed to the gingival margin. These
temporary shells were then lined on the
occlusal and facial areas with hybrid
composite (Figs. 7-8). This allows for a
more durable and esthetic material for
the facial aspect of the anterior teeth and
a more durable surface for the occlusion
on the posterior teeth. This is neces-
sary since the patient will be wearing
the temporaries for a month or more to
evaluate the esthetics and the occlusion.
The patient is then seen for the
preparation and temporization of the
maxillary and mandibular teeth. This
was to be done in two visits to make
for shorter visits for the patient. The
mandible was the first to be prepared.
One side was isolated and prepared at
a time. An OptraGate and Isolite were
placed for isolation (Fig. 9). The combi-
nation of these two devices makes for a
very easy field to work in.
Once the mandible was prepared (Fig.
10), the temporary shell was placed
in the mouth to verify reduction and
fit of the vacuform (Fig. 11). Note that
the vacuform conforms to the gingival
margins. This allows the clinician to seat
the temporary matrix to the gingival
margin ensuring the proper height of
the temporaries as designed by the diag-
nostic wax-up. Protemp Garant was
then placed in the temporary shell, and
the matrix was seated to the gingival
margin. The excess was cleaned away
