long-term temporaries that are
fabricated chairside using CAD/CAM
technology offer a number of benefits
in comparison to conventional chairside
restorations or temporaries that have
been fabricated in a laboratory.
They offer esthetics that are superior
to those of conventional chairside resto-
rations, are less expensive than labora-
tory temporaries and can also be fabri-
cated much more quickly. Fabrication is
relatively straightforward, as is demon-
strated in the following case study of the
restoration of a gap in the anterior area
following an extraction.
Step-by-step, the process involved in
using CEREC AC and composite blocks
to fabricate a long-term temporary
comprised of three units is explained.
Product details are also included
throughout the case study.
Using crowns and temporary bridges in
patient treatment are standard techniques
in German dental practices. Until final

For a long time, composite materials
were considered inferior due to their
relatively low strength and limited
stability in the oral cavity. Now, sophis-
ticated composites have been developed
that offer characteristics that have been
significantly improved from a materials-
science perspective.
VITA CAD-Temp is comprised of
acrylate polymer composite blocks
distinguished by a level of flexural
strength of 80 MPa. This is approxi-
mately equivalent to the strength offered
by prosthetic teeth. Long-term tempo-
raries fabricated using this material can
be removed from the stump and repo-
sitioned several times without risking a
LONG-TERM TEMPORARIES:
MATERIALS AND OPTIONS
In combination with the high-perfor-
mance composite blocks VITA CAD-
Temp monoColor and VITA CAD-Temp
multiColor (from VITA Zahnfabrik,
Bad Säckingen, Germany) that support
milling, the CAD/CAM system CEREC
AC (from Sirona Dental Systems,
Bensheim, Germany) facilitates chair-
side fabrication of superior-quality,
long-term temporaries. Using the term
"long-term temporary" is recommended
when speaking to patients, as the term
"provisional" has negative connotations
that do not reflect the quality of this type
of restoration.
