have been to the implementation and acceptance of theCEREC
system, what is even more exciting to me is the newer breed of
CEREC owners. Each year, thousands of clinicians discover the
joys of CAD/CAM dentistry by integrating CEREC into their
practices. Seeing these clinicians posting their own incredible
cases on the cerecdoctors.commessage boards shows me what
the CEREC community has evolved into.
To help nurture this sharing of knowledge and experience,
one of the features that we will have at the cerecdoctors.com
Scientific Symposium inOctober inLas Vegaswill be a showcase
of the artistic talents of the members of the CEREC community
(www.cerecdoctors.com/academy for more information).
Passionate CEREC users, both new and seasoned, will have
the opportunity to showcase their best cases and compete for
the winner of the Best Case in several categories: Best Poste-
rior Case; Best Anterior Case; Best Implant Case; and Best
Comprehensive Case.
I think, in the past, one could have reasonably argued that
CEREC created nothing more than a glorified temporary.
Today, however, the advent of newer, more esthetic materials,
better techniques and superior equipment means that that
argument is out the window.
I hope that you will join us in Las Vegas for what promises
to be an incredible meeting with the likes of Spear CEO Imtiaz
Manji, Dr. PascalMagne, Dr. Dennis Fasbinder andour cover boy
for this issue, Dr. Mike Skramstad, among others. We will also
showcase some of the finest dentistry performed by a CEREC.
Thirty years have passed since CEREC milled out its first
restoration. While I pay homage and respect to the past and
those pioneers who paved the way, I also salute the future. Just
as CAD/CAM is now coming into its own with new features,
techniques and materials, so too are the dentists of today real-
izing that CAD/CAM is something that their practices can
benefit from— significantly.

it occurred tome the other day that it is nowalmost
30 years since the introduction of the first CAD/CAMmachine
— the original CEREC invented by Dr. WernerMörmann. With
themany advances that have occurred in the last three decades
and, considering where we were as compared to where we are
now, I thought it fitting to reflect on the pioneers who have
paved the way for today’s CEREC owners, and to give some
insight into where we are heading.
Over the years that I have been involved with CEREC, I’ve
had the privilege of meeting many of the early adopters. These
trailblazers bought into the concept of CEREC when others
were not willing to invest in the long learning curve — not
to mention the substandard restorations of 30-year-old tech-
nology. Many of these pioneers are no longer “in the game”
in the sense that they have retired from clinical practice after
years in the trenches of successfully using CEREC.
Now, as critical as these
early adopters
