, the
trend in chairside treatments is clearly
moving in this direction. Thanks to the
hybrid ceramic VITAEnamic, amaterial
is now available that is ideally suited to
the fabrication of thin restorations due
to the even balance it offers between
strength and elasticity.
A number of examples will follow in
this article that demonstrate the esthetic
potential of VITA Enamic in minimally
invasive reconstruction — including a
case study in which an experimental
approach to shademanagement resulted
in a successful outcome.
Figures 1a and 1b show the restoration
— as performed in just one treatment
session using a partial veneer fabricated
using VITA Enamic in shade 2M2 and
HT translucency — of a tooth #9 (21)
that had been fractured as a result of an
accident. The edges of the fracture were
simply beveled and adhesive bonding
was used for cementation. Following
in-situ polishing, the result is a natural
appearance without any obvious resto-
ration margins or inconsistencies in
terms of shade.
By remodeling the tooth stump #7
(12) using VITA Enamic, the shape of a
natural lateral incisorwas achieved (Figs.
2a-2b). The tooth stump, which was
appropriately shaded, was not milled.
The enamel surface was conditioned
without shade correction
for the cementationprocess
using the sandblasting
and acid-etch techniques.

situ, a natural appearance is achieved
where the canines are shaped like lateral
incisors. The increased shade intensity of
the canines results in a slight darkening
of the reconstructions. A slight bright-
ening would have been the expected
result when using a block with “T” trans-
lucency; however, the loss of esthetic
shade depth would presumably have also
resulted in a slightly chalkier appearance.
Thanks to the convincing chameleon
effect provided by the hybrid ceramic,
the tooth shade is merged perfectly with
the shade of the restoration.
CREATING THE
LATERAL INCISORS
Due to agenesis of the lateral incisors,
the canines developed directly adjacent
to the central incisors. The unattractive

Once the required effort and the
resulting benefit had been weighed
up, no further shade optimization was
performed in connection with cementa-
tion. At 0.2 mm, it is impressive just how
