2015
earlier this year, dentsply entered the
world of materials for the cerec system.
Celtra Duo, Zirconia-reinforced Lithium Silicate
(ZLS) block, has the unique properties of being both esthetic
and strong. What is most intriguing about this material is
that using an oven is optional. In this article, I will present
a clinical case using the Celtra Duo block, and have the
opportunity to interview Dr. Markus Vollmann, Dentsply’s
director of development and application technologies, who
was responsible for creating the block and bringing it to
market.
CASE STUDY
Let’s first review the clinical case which shows Celtra Duo
in use. A 58-year-old female presented with a complaint of
food impaction in the lower left quadrant. Radiographs and
clinical exam revealed secondary marginal decay around the
PFM crown margins of #19 and #20, as well as significant
interproximal decay around #21 and #22. The treatment
plan called for full-coverage crowns for #19-21 and a direct
resin fill for #22 (Fig. 1).
We opted to use Celtra Duo in this case due to its charac-
teristics of detailed edge milling and its ability to polish or
glaze the restoration.
The teeth were appropriately prepared for all-ceramic
crowns utilizing an electric hand piece for efficiency.
I generally prefer to prepare all the teeth together and then
image once, rather than use some of the other techniques
for multiple teeth that are present.
The preparation requirements for Celtra Duo are similar
to other all ceramic restorations. Users should aim for
1.5 mm to 2 mm of occlusal reduction with at least 1 mm
of axial reduction. As with all CEREC restorations, the
margins are the most critical part of the preparation and
should be smooth and polished. Any milled restoration
requires smooth polished margins so that the milling unit
can adequately mill these restorations with ease.
After thepreparationswere complete, the casewas imaged
using the Omnicam and the entire quadrant and opposing
dentition and buccal bite were captured with the camera
