WHAT IS "ZLS" EXACTLY AND HOW IS IT BENEFICIAL TO
THE RESTORATION? FURTHERMORE, HOW DO THOSE
BENEFITS TRANSLATE INTO BENEFITS FOR THE DENTIST?
ZLS stands for Zirconia-reinforced Lithium Silicate
high-strength glass ceramic. During development,
we saw the possibility to dissolve the zirconium itself
in the amorphous (glassy) phase, which builds the
matrix for the lithium silicate crystals. The result is a
larger number of very fine-grained lithium crystallites
whose high glass content gives the material its excel-
lent light-optical andmechanical properties. Theultra-
fine microstructure allows Celtra Duo blocks to be
machined in the tooth shaded state (final crystallized
product), and allows for good polish-ability. Further-
more, this unique microstructure provides for excel-
lent esthetics by combining opalescence with translu-
cency resulting in a natural, beautiful restoration.
ARE THERE CLINICAL SITUATIONS WHERE IT IS ADVISABLE
TO FIRE THE RESTORATION RATHER THAN SIMPLY MILL AND
POLISH? IF SO, WHY OR WHY NOT?
If you want to ensure the safest option when it is
not known if the right axial thickness overall was
achieved, we would recommend the fired version
because of higher strength.
WITH CELTRA DUO (ZLS), WE HAVE THE CHOICE
OF TWO PATHWAYS: MILL --> POLISH --> SEAT;
OR MILL --> FIRE --> STAIN & GLAZE --> SEAT.
NO OTHER BLOCK CAN PROVIDE THESE OPTIONS;
WHY IS THAT SO IMPORTANT TO A DENTIST?
SIMPLY PUT: WHY SHOULD I CARE THAT THERE
ARE TWO PROCESSING PATHWAYS, WHEN THE
BLOCK I'M CURRENTLY USING IS JUST FINE WITH
ONLY ONE PROCESSING PATHWAY?
Celtra Duo provides the clinician choice – two path-
ways with one fully crystallized, tooth shaded block
without sacrificing esthetics, strength, or processing
speed—benefits no other block canoffer. The unique
microstructure of ZLS provides tangible benefits
chariside, some of them as shared with us by our customers:
• the ability to shade match
• characterize a tooth shaded block
• carry less inventory
• easy polishing
• excellent margins
• outstanding esthetics
Celtra Duo provides a real chairside solution with meaningful
benefits for clinicians and ultimately the patients we all serve.
DOES THE GLAZE CONTRIBUTE TO THE STRENGTH OF THE MATERIAL?
No, the glaze does not contribute to the strength of the mate-
rial; it is the firing cycle that increases the strength. As the glass
transition temperature is reached, the glass ceramic turns to a
high viscous “liquid;” however, not as high to lose the shape of
the restoration. Since there is higher glass content in Celtra Duo,
the glass parts fills any flaws caused by the milling of the material
leading back to the original strength. The glaze material only acts
as a glossy intensifier.
