visibly altered surface structure. By use of
suitable bonding systems such as RelyX
UnicemSelf-Adhesive ResinCement (3M
ESPE) or Variolink II (Ivoclar Vivadent,
FL-Schaan), a long-lasting, strong bond
to the cement with shear bond strengths
of 21 to 27 MPa is achieved according to
the manufacturer.
CLINICAL CASES
In the following, three example cases
fromclinical practice are documented. In
the first two cases, a molar was restored
with a crown made of VITA Enamic. It is
shown that very good results are obtained
by polishing or by characterization using
the staining technique.
POLISHED POSTERIOR CROWN
In region 27 (tooth #14), a chairside
restoration with a polished crown made
of the hybrid ceramic VITA Enamic was
planned (Fig. 5). Thus, the tooth was
prepared in accordance with the manu-
facturer’s instructions and the recom-
mendations for ceramic restorations
(Fig. 6). After having completed the usual
work steps for digitization of the prepa-
ration and virtual design, the proposal
was checked in the milling preview.
Subsequently, a VITA Enamic blank was
placed in the milling machine and the
crown was produced in an automated
process. Figure 7 shows themilled crown
after removal from the blank.
Afterwards, the milling sprue was
removed using a diamond bur (Fig. 8),
and the crown was polished. The VITA
Enamic Polishing Set Clinical is composed
of eight instruments for the contra-angle
handpiece, and four instruments for both
pre- and high-gloss polishing. Impres-
sions of the pre-polishing step are offered
in Figures 9a-9c. Figures 10a-10b show
the work steps of high-gloss polishing.
The set of polishing instruments was
specifically designed for secure surface
processing of restorations made of
the new hybrid ceramic, and meets all
