As you have seen in this issue, Dentsply Sirona has again created
an innovation for CAD/CAM dentistry: the ability to mill chair-
side zirconia! Not only is zirconia one of the leading material
choices for dentists sending cases to the laboratories, it’s a good
tool to have in any restorative tool belt. Now the ability to mill this
popular material chairside makes the integration of the CEREC
system even more compelling in any dental office.
Many clinicians have been on the sidelines looking at the
CEREC technology thinking, well, cool technology, but I want to
be able to put something stronger on the teeth in the back of the
mouth. Well, now with the release of the new zirconia material,
every clinician has a myriad of material choices for virtually any
area of the mouth. Between Vita Mark II, Empress, e.max, Lava
Ultimate, Enamic, Celtra, Cerasmart — and now inCoris TZI C
— being a CEREC dentist means you have options that no other
system can give you for taking care of your patients’ teeth.
It has been an exciting journey in my years as a CAD/CAM dentist.
The fact is that the true excitement will come in the years ahead.
Zirconiawas amaterial that was simply limited towhat could be fabri-
cated by the laboratory. But now with the new CEREC zirconia solu-
tion, whatwas considereda fringe technology is nowtrulymainstream
withprocedures thatwere not possible even just a fewyears ago.
If you are an existing CEREC owner, I hope you will join us on
cerecdoctors.com as we share all of the new innovations that are
available today. And if you are not a current owner, I still invite
you to explore what CAD/CAMdentistry can do for your practice.

Dentsply and Sirona had joined their respective operations in
a deal valued at more than $13 billion. As a CEREC owner for
well over a decade, I had seen Sirona grow from a subsidiary of
the Siemens corporation to a powerhouse in CAD/CAM dentistry.
With technologies such as 3-D imaging solutions that are highly
regarded for their ease of use as well as the ability to integrate the
cone beam data with CAD/CAM data — allowing for seamless
implant planning also in the market — Sirona had become a well
regarded equipment manufacturer for dental practices.
Dentsply has also been regarded as a well-respected corpora-
tion with numerous different divisions under their collective
umbrella. It only made sense to merge, since the company was
lacking a CAD/CAM division. Joining with Sirona made perfect
sense to fill out the product portfolio.
Certainly, the throngs of current and prospective CEREC users
in attendance were abuzz with questions about the merger. What
would become of the CEREC technology, the most powerful and
popular CAD/CAM system available? Would the product innova-
tion continue as it had over the years, or would things slow down
beneath an ever-growing mountain of bureaucracy?
As a long-time CEREC user, I’d be lying if I said that I, person-
ally, was not nervous. And I had questions of my own. Would the
CAD/CAM system to which I had dedicated my career continue
to be at the top of the heap, or would it be left behind in a cloud,
forgotten in all of the other obligations that came to the forefront
with the merger of these two organizations?
Well, it’s been a couple of months since this announcement and,
as of thiswriting, themerger of these two companies has completed,
and I can tell you first hand that the innovation in CEREC has not
changed. Innovation is alive and well as Sirona (now Dentsply
Sirona) sets the standard for innovation in CAD/CAMdentistry.

A Funny Thing Happened
on the Way to CEREC 30
AMerger. A New Chairside Material.
A Giant Leap for CAD/CAMDentistry.
we had been working all year, as a team and individually,
to prepare what would eventually become the world’s
biggest CEREC gathering. It happened in Sin City, and this event was called CEREC 30.
To this day I still recall vividly the 6,000-plus guests in attendance at my clinical keynote lecture to help kick off the meeting.
The air was filled with enthusiasm as well for not only what was to become a great collaboration of speakers and workshops all focusing
on the CEREC technology, but also for what had just been announced — one of the largest mergers of dental companies in history.
