VARIOLINK ESTHETIC ADHESIVE CEMENTATION SYSTEM
In the early 1990s, Ivoclar Vivadent initiated the Esthetic
Revolution with the introduction of IPS Empress and Variolink.
Variolink quickly became the leading cement by providing clini-
cians with the ability to perfect the final appearance of their all-
ceramic restorations using various shades and translucencies of
resin cement. Later, specialized “light-cure only” veneer cements
such as Variolink Veneer were introduced, providing additional
shade options, long-term shade stability and improvements in
handling properties.
Fast-forward to today, and Variolink Esthetic (Fig. 6) represents
the evolution of these two well-established, clinically proven
cements with the addition of an innovative initiator system and a
universal adhesive.
Some are referring to this new cement as a “game-changer” due
to its remarkable handling properties, simplified shading system
and its universal application within the dental practice.
Handling and easy removal of excess cement have always been
important attributes when selecting a cement for the practice.
The unique viscosity of Variolink Esthetic leads to easy seating
of restorations and keeps excess material from running beyond
the margin. Those who prefer to partially cure excess cement
prior to removal will appreciate the innovative initiator system
(e.g., Ivocerin) which allows you to achieve a gel-like consistency
without over-curing for fast easy removal (Fig. 7).
Shade selection is now easier than ever. Start with the highly
translucent Neutral shade which has no effect on the final appear-
ance of the restoration. If necessary, the restoration can be
gradually brightened using the Light or Light+ shades, or gradu-
ally darkened using the Warm or Warm+ shades. Unlike many
other resin cements on the market, Variolink Esthetic is 100
percent amine-free, resulting in no visible shade shift for the life
of the restoration (Figs. 8-9).
Having one adhesive resin cement to accommodate all restor-
ative materials and all situations is something dentists have been
asking for – and for a long time. With all shades available in both
light-cure and dual-cure versions, and with the universal adhesive
(Adhese Universal) being compatible with all etching techniques,
Variolink Esthetic covers all the bases.
